BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence (UI) is common among postpartum women, but many do not seek medical help due to limited knowledge. Understanding the level of knowledge about UI in this population is essential for improving care-seeking behaviors and implementing targeted interventions. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to examine knowledge regarding UI among postpartum women with UI within 6 weeks to 1 year after delivery. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at obstetric clinic in two level-three grade A hospitals in Shenzhen, China, from January 2023 to June 2023. Women in their 6 weeks to 1 year after delivery with UI were asked to complete a questionnaire comprising three sections: (1) demographic variable; (2) International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Short Form (ICIQ-UI SF); and (3) The Urinary Incontinence Quiz (UIQ). RESULTS: A total of 1228 women completed the questionnaire. Their mean UIQ score was 6.63 ± 3.51 (minimum = 2, maximum = 15), indicating the deficiency of UI knowledge among Chinese postpartum women. A total of 86.4% of participants experienced slight or moderate postpartum UI. The results of multivariate linear regression models for UIQ reveal significant independent associations between questionnaire scores and two variables: experience in pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) (p < 0.001) and UI treatment in the past (p < 0.001). The overall model fit was R2 = 0.559 (p < 0.001). The regression coefficients for the experience in PFMT and UI treatment in the past were 2.301 and 4.916, respectively. However, no other discernible factors were identified to distinguish between those with and without adequate knowledge. CONCLUSIONS: Postpartum women with UI within 6 weeks to 1 year after delivery had poor knowledge of UI. Targeted educational interventions focusing on PFMT and early treatment for UI are essential.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the effect of catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) Val158Met and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) Val66Met to post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) and the interaction with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). METHODS: Seventy-six patients with PSCI were randomly assigned to Group (1) (n = 38) to receive anodal tDCS of left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex or Group (2) (n = 38) to receive sham stimulation. The intensity of the tDCS was 2 mA, and the stimulations were applied over the left DLPFC for 10 sessions. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and backward digit span test (BDST) were assessed before, immediately after, and one month after stimulation. RESULTS: After stimulation, patients in the tDCS group showed better improvement in both MoCA and BDST than those in the sham group. The results of GLMs also supported the main effects of tDCS on general cognitive function and working memory. Then we found that COMT genotype may have a main effect on the improvement of MoCA and BDST, and there may be an interaction between COMT genotype and tDCS in enhancing BDST. In contrast, BDNF genotype showed no significant main or interaction effects on any scales. CONCLUSIONS: These findings demonstrate that tDCS can improve cognition after stroke. Gene polymorphisms of COMT can affect the efficacy of tDCS on PSCI, but BDNF may not. SIGNIFICANCE: This study found that COMT Val158Met has an interaction on the efficacy of prefrontal tDCS in cognitive function, which provides reference for future tDCS research and clinical application.

To explore the influences of chemical oxidation on the physiological and ecological functions of indigenous microorganisms during contaminated soil remediation, three oxidants, including KMnO4, Na2S2O8, and O3, were selected to investigate their remediation effects on PAHs and the responses to indigenous microorganisms under different liquid-solid ratios, in this study. The results showed that:when the ΣPAHs concentration was 679.1 mg·kg-1 and the dosage of KMnO4 and Na2S2O8 was 1%, the removal efficiency of ΣPAHs reached up to 96.9% and 95.7% under the liquid-solid ratio of 6:1; for the O3 treatment, the removal efficiency of ΣPAHs was the highest(82.3%) at the O3 dosage and the liquid-solid ratio of 72 mg·min-1 and 8:1, respectively. The removal efficiency of low ring(3-4 rings) PAHs was higher than that of high ring(5-6 rings) PAHs under different liquid-solid ratios. The highest removal efficiencies were observed for phenanthrene and acenaphthene, whereas for benzo[a]pyrene, only the KMnO4treatment provided an effective performance, showing the highest removal efficiency of 97.4%. The microbial quantity analysis indicated that the quantity of soil microorganisms in the soil dropped sharply after being treated with KMnO4, decreasing from 108 copies·g-1 to 105 copies·g-1, whereas it changed only slightly after being treated with Na2S2O8 and O3. The community structure analysis showed that Proteobacteria were predominant in the contaminated soil, with the relative abundance of 99.5%. The addition of KMnO4 and Na2S2O8 significantly increased the microbial diversity; in particular, the relative abundance of a variety of microorganisms(such as Ralstonia and Acinetobacter) that can degrade PAHs was remarkably increased. The analysis of microbial metabolic function pathways revealed that chemical oxidation could simultaneously increase the relative abundance of PAHs-degrading bacteria and improve the ability of organic metabolism. Overall, the KMnO4 treatment greatly altered the quantity of microorganisms and the structure of the microbial community and the relative abundance of PAHs-degrading microorganisms at the liquid-solid ratio of 6:1.

BACKGROUND: Living with pelvic organ prolapse (POP) after delivery negatively impacted women's daily living and was detrimental to their psychological health. AIM: The purpose of the present study was to explore the effects of POP after delivery on women's sexual function, quality of life (QoL), and psychological health within the first year following delivery. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 640 female participants at obstetric clinic in 2 hospitals in Shenzhen, China. OUTCOMES: All women completed following questionnaires: short form of the Pelvic Organ Prolapse/Urinary Incontinence Sexual Questionnaire (PISQ-12) on sexual function, Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory-20 (PFDI-20) on well-being and QoL, Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) on psychological health, and International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Short Form. RESULTS: Women with symptomatic POP (N = 250) had higher mean scores (P < .05) than those without symptoms (N = 390) in PISQ-12, PFDI-20, and SCL-90-R domains. In the symptomatic POP group (N = 250), the sexually dysfunctional group (N = 137) had significantly higher mean scores (P < .001) than the sexually functional group (N = 113) in PISQ-12, PFDI-20, and SCL-90-R domains. Women with POP duration ≥6 months (N = 132) had significantly higher mean scores (P < .001) than women with POP duration <6 months (N = 118) in PISQ-12, PFDI-20, and SCL-90-R domains. The multiple linear regression model of PISQ-12 showed that constipation history, regular pelvic floor muscle training, parity, and symptomatic POP were independently correlated with the questionnaire score (P < .05). CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: The significantly pervasive nature of POP often leads to the neglect of a substantial percentage of sexual problems and related emotional suffering, emphasizing the critical importance of raising awareness about this issue among clinicians and the general public. STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS: The current study brought attention to significant aspects of postpartum POP; the findings suggest issues concerning POP occurrences and their impacts on sexual function, QoL, and psychological health. Primary constraints are linked to the utilization of self-report assessments. CONCLUSION: The current study reveals a robust correlation between POP in postpartum women and compromised sexual function, QoL, and psychological health.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and validate a Decision-Making Ability Scale (DMA-S) for postpartum urinary incontinence (PPUI) women engaging in pelvic floor physical therapy (PFPT). METHODS: Items were created in line with a review of the literature and exploratory qualitative study with 22 women. The items were submitted for expert opinion and a pilot implementation was made with 58 women with PPUI. Furthermore, the construct validity of the scale was tested with exploratory factor analysis (EFA) (n = 220) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) (n = 240). Internal consistency for the Chronbach's α and test-retest reliability for the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were also investigated for the DMA-S in the study. RESULTS: The results of the EFA indicated a Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin value of 0.85 and Bartlett's test of sphericity showed a χ2 value of 8352.101, p < 0.001. After removing one item with factor loading values below 0.50, the resulting factor structure accounted for 83.38% of the total variance. The fit indices of the scale model tested in the CFA were determined as χ2 /df = 1.08 < 3, root mean square error of approximation = 0.018 < 0.08, comparative fit index = 0.996 > 0.90, Tucker-Lewis index = 0.995 > 0.90, goodness-of-fit index (GFI) = 0.933 > 0.90, adjusted GFI = 0.916 > 0.90, and incremental fit index = 0.996 > 0.90. The Cronbach's α values were 0.95-0.97 for the subdimensions of the scale and 0.93 for the total scale. Data also showed a good test-retest stability (ICC = 0.984). CONCLUSION: The DMA-S is a reliable and valid tool for assessing the decision-making ability for PPUI women engaging in PFPT.

BACKGROUND: Post-ischemic stroke executive impairment (PISEI) is a serious obstacle for patients to returning to their society and is currently difficult to screen early and clinically ineffective. AIM: The aim of the study was to clarify whether functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) can be used as a rapid screening tool for PISEI and to explore the efficacy of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in PISEI patients and the changes in brain function. METHODS: A single-blind, randomized controlled study design was used to detect hemodynamic differences by fNIIRS in 16 PISEI patients and 16 healthy subjects during the resting state and Stroop task, respectively. After 3 days, all subjects received a single TMS intervention and underwent simultaneous fNIRS testing for the Stroop task before and 3 days after the TMS intervention. RESULTS: PISEI patients had significantly higher HbO2 content in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), the right pre-motor cortex (PMC) and the right primary sensorimotor cortex (SM1) during the Stroop task compared to the resting state (F = 141.966, p < 0.001), but significantly lower than healthy subjects (T = -3.413, p = 0.002). After TMS intervention, PISEI patients' time and error number scores on the Stroop test were significantly enhanced, and the functional activity of the above-mentioned brain regions was significantly more active than at baseline, while the strength of their functional connections with each other was markedly increased. CONCLUSIONS: fNIRS helped screen and diagnose PISEI. A single TMS session benefited PISEI patients with effects lasting 3 days, which may be attributed to activation of the left DLPFC, right PMC and right SM1 brain regions.

The differences between flat and U-Shaped pure copper strips during a continuous extrusion process were investigated and analyzed through finite element simulation and experimentation. The simulation results showed that nearly all of the temperature-, velocity-, and loading-force-related parameters of the U-Shaped product at the die exit were smaller than those of the flat product, which indicated that extruding U-Shaped copper strips by continuous extrusion was superior to the flat strips. This conclusion was further verified experimentally by measuring the temperature and torque force. Then, a comparative analysis of the microstructure of the two cases was carried out. The average grain size of the U-Shaped strips was 65.6 µm, which was smaller than that of the flat strips, which was 96.7 µm. In addition, the microstructure of the U-Shaped strips was more uniform and had a higher recrystallization ratio, which can be attributed to the even and severe plastic deformation. This study thus solves the size limitation issue that existed in continuous extrusion.

The worldwide emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance is accelerated by irrational administration and use of empiric antibiotics. A key point to the crisis is a lack of rapid diagnostic protocols for antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), which is crucial for a timely and rational antibiotic prescription. Here, a recombinant bacteriophage tail fiber protein (TFP) was functionalized on magnetic particles to specifically capture Pseudomonas aeruginosa, while fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled-magainin II was utilized as the indicator. For solving the magnetic particles' blocking effects, a reverse assaying protocol based on TFP recognition was developed to investigate the feasibility of detection and AST of P. aeruginosa. P. aeruginosa can be rapidly, sensitively and specifically detected within 1.5 h with a linear range of 1.0 × 102 to 1.0 × 106 colony forming units (CFU)⋅mL-1 and a detection limit of 3.3 × 10 CFU⋅mL-1. Subsequently, AST results, which were consistent with broth dilution results, can be obtained within 3.5 h. Due to the high specificity of the TFP, AST can actually be conducted without the need for bacterial isolation and identification. Based on the proof-of-principle work, the detection and AST of other pathogens can be extended by expressing the TFPs of their bacteriophages.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation combined with cognitive training on executive function and activities of daily living performance among stroke patients. METHODS: A total of 50 subjects were enrolled and randomly allocated into 2 groups of 25 each. The real-transcranial direct current stimulation group was simultaneously subjected to transcranial direct current stimulation and cognitive training, while the sham-transcranial direct current stimulation group was simultaneously subjected to sham transcranial direct current stimulation and cognitive training. At baseline, and after treatment, each subject was assessed with the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), Stroop Color-Word Test (SCWT), Digital Symbol Test (DST), Mini-mental State Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Activities of Daily Living Scale (ADLs). RESULTS: After treatment, the gains in most indices of WCST, SCWT, DST, MMSE, MoCA and ADLs in the real-transcranial direct current stimulation group were significantly higher than those in the sham-transcranial direct current stimulation group (p<0.05). Nonetheless, no significant differences were noted in the gains in SCWT (including only Part A time and error, and Part B time) and activities of daily living (including only basic activities of daily living) between the 2 groups (p>>0.05). CONCLUSION: Transcranial direct current stimulation combined with cognitive training was found to significantly enhance executive function and instrumental activities of daily living performance among stroke patients.

Background: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been employed for motor function rehabilitation for stroke patients, but its effects on post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) remains controversial. Objective: To identify the effects of rTMS intervention on PSCI patients and its potential neural correlates to behavioral improvements. Methods: We recruited 34 PSCI patients for 20 sessions of 10 Hz rTMS or no-stim control treatments over the left dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Cognitive function was evaluated with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale, Victoria Stroop Test, Rivermead Behavior Memory Test, and Activities of Daily Living (ADL) assessed with the Modified Barthel Index. 14 patients received functional MRI scan, a useful non-invasive technique of determining how structurally segregated and functionally specialized brain areas were interconnected, which was reflected by blood oxygenation level-dependent signals. The amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and functional connectivity (FC) were applied as the analytical approaches, which were used to measure the resting-state brain activity and functional connection. Results: rTMS improved cognitive functions and ADLs for PSCI patients relative to patients who received no-stim control treatment. The cognitive improvements correlated to increased ALFF of the left medial prefrontal cortex, and increased FC of right medial prefrontal cortex and right ventral anterior cingulate cortex. Conclusion: 10 Hz rTMS at DLPFC could improve cognitive function and quality of life for PSCI patients, which is associated with an altered frontal cortical activity. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to interrogate the effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on the performance in activities of daily living (ADL) and attention function after stroke. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Inpatient rehabilitation hospital. SUBJECTS: We randomized 62 stroke patients with attention dysfunction who were randomly assigned into two groups, and two dropped out from each group. The TMS group (n = 29) and a sham group (n = 29), whose mean (SD) was 58.12 (6.72) years. A total of 33 (56.9%) patients had right hemisphere lesion while the rest 25 (43.1%) patients had left hemisphere lesion. INTERVENTIONS: Patients in the TMS group received 10 Hz, 700 pulses of TMS, while those in the sham group received sham TMS for four weeks. All the participants underwent comprehensive cognitive training. MAIN MEASURES: At baseline, and end of the four-week treatment, the performance in the activities of daily living was assessed by Functional Independence Measure (FIM). On the other side, attention dysfunction was screened by Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), while the attention function was assessed by the Trail Making Test-A (TMT-A), Digit Symbol Test (DST) and Digital Span Test (DS). RESULTS: Our data showed a significant difference in the post-treatment gains in motor of Functional Independence Measure (13.00 SD 1.69 vs 4.21 SD 2.96), cognition of Functional Independence Measure (4.69 SD 1.56 vs 1.52 SD 1.02), total of Functional Independence Measure (17.69 SD 2.36 vs 5.72 SD 3.12), Mini-Mental State Examination (3.07 SD 1.36 vs 1.21 SD 0.62), time taken in Trail Making Test-A (96.67 SD 25.18 vs 44.28 SD 19.45), errors number in Trail Making Test-A (2.72 SD 1.03 vs 0.86 SD 1.03), Digit Symbol Test (3.76 SD 1.09 vs 0.76 SD 0.87) or Digital Span Test (1.69 SD 0.54 vs 0.90 SD 0.72) between the TMS group and the sham group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, we demonstrate that TMS improves the performance in the activities of daily living and attention function in patients with stroke.
